Portraiture | End Of Autumn [Part Two]

As promised, here is Part Two of my “End Of Autumn” portrait session in with Iris. Although taken on the same day, at the same location, these images have a completely different feel to them. Compared to the warm, cozy and relaxed autumnal portraiture, the second part of our shoot was more edgy, high fashion fine art styled. They look awesome in black and white.

I will be taking actively planning and shooting some larger more complex shoots in the New Year and throughout 2014. If you would like to work with me on a concept or shoot, please use the contact form or you can find me on modelling site PurplePort.

Portraiture | End Of Autumn [Part One]

Almost by accident, I seem to have themed my first few fashion portraiture sessions around the changing of the seasons. I’ve been trying to organise an autumnal shoot for weeks and weeks, but due to timings or weather, it seemed like it wasn’t going to happen. So this weekend, the last week of November, with the last remnants of orange leaving the trees, I was finnaly able to organise a very last minute shoot with the lovely Iris. With very little time to plan, we headed back over to Crickly Hill in Gloucestershire, which is where is shot my last session, End Of Summer. The location may have been familiar, but the colours, style and approach to the shoot was entirely different. Oh, and it was a lot, lot colder! Brrr!

For this first part of the afternoon we explored and shot some relaxed, fun fashion portraiture. Towards the end of the shoot, after a change of wardrobe, we tried something a little edgier and different. For both parts of the shoot, I am really pleased with the results, especially considering the amount of notice and planning involved. Sometimes you just have to go for it. Iris was a real star and worked so hard, despite the cold and frequent interruptions from dog walkers on a Sunday stroll.

Here are some of my favourites from the first part of our shoot, look out for Part Two of this portrait session coming soon.

The Joy Of Snapshots

If it looks like I haven’t been doing much portrait or wedding photography recently, its well…because I haven’t. I’ve been having some time off. Time away from the big DSLR and the constant pressure to be creative, inspired and working 24/7.

Next year is going to be such an amazing year for me personally, and for Scuffins Photography. We have so many wonderful couples, so many amazing opportunities ahead of us, we can’t bloody wait. Just writing about it now gives me goosebumps. 2014 going to be a busy, epic year of photography.

But right now, it’s cold. It’s dark. Christmas is on it’s way. I’m resting up and enjoying the rest of what life has to offer. I’m kicking back and leaving the DSLR’s and the big expensive lenses safely away in the camera bag.

But this hasn’t meant no photography. Just a different type of photography. The kind of photography where you just follow your gut and capture what’s right in front of you.

Just snapshots. Innocent, harmless and fun snapshots.

Of course I love the level of freedom and options a DSLR, lenses, flash and photoshop can offer me. I’ll always love to shoot things that inspire me and create an emotional response. To plan, approach and create images with meaning and context, to search out ideas and situations I can get my creative teeth into.

But…

Snapshots are quick. They’re easy. They can mean something, or they can mean nothing at all. See, snap and move on. It’s just a picture. These below are just pictures.

With just an iPhone, I’ve taken more snapshots, more photos without thought, than I have in a long time. And it’s been awesome. Fun, instantly gratifying, no strings attached photography.

After a month of snapshots, I’m not only feeling more engaged and creative, but also more appreciative of just how I can use that honest, gut feeling when it comes to my wedding and portrait work.

Like I said, I can’t wait for things to come.

Welcome Home Workshop | London

Welcome Home 010 by Chris Scuffins Welcome Home Workshop | London Scuffins Photography | http://www.scuffinsphotography.com

On the 10th October, after one absurdly early train journey, 40mins squished on rush hour tube, and a huge coffee, I arrived at Belt Craft Studios in London. I was here for the Welcome Home Workshop organised by wonderful wedding photographer and all round star Emma Case and her husband, awesome Pete.

Before I even considered the idea of being a wedding photographer, I have followed and adored Emma’s work. Her brightness, honesty and happiness comes through in everything she does. Emma single-handily made me, a 23 year old bloke, endlessly seek out and enjoy browsing wedding blogs and viewing and soaking up as much lovely happy, photography as I can. (My partner Helen, for a time was a little worried why I kept pointing out my favourite weddings…. and kept dragging her to wedding shows…..)

So here I was, in London, in a big old interesting studio space ready to talk, listen and learn photography at my first ever photography workshop.

You know what? Emma and Pete together put on one bloody brilliant day. It was so fun, welcoming and inspiring; it’s going to have profound effect on me as a photographer and as a person for a long, long time.

I was initially nervous about meeting everyone. I’ve never actually met any other photographers before, and expected most would be more experienced then me. I was so anxious to meet my own expectations and not to say anything stupid. But true to it’s name, within a few minutes, it did feel like home. Emma talked us through her story, her approach and even her workflow and loads more besides. It was honest and open experience all about wedding photography.

For the first time, I was able to talk about the stuff I love, with people who love it just as much as I do. I left the day with so much new information, new ideas and new questions for myself and my business. Every second of the day was inspiring, rewarding and a joy to be a part of.

I must admit, I didn’t actually take as many photos as I thought I would. I was so busy soaking up ideas, inspiration and the warm friendly atmosphere. And smiling. Lots of smiling. It was just too much bloody fun. Emma had enlisted the help of two gorgeous couples to photograph, to run through her tips and techniques for directing a fun and natural portrait session. Watching Emma at work with her couples was really nice. Her advice was less about technique, and more about letting go and being in the moment.

There was a theme that ran throughout the day that really spoke to me. It’s now clearer to me why I do this. Why I want to be the absolute best I photographer I can be.

People. Fun. Love. This is all that matters. This is what lights me up, brightens my life and kicks me out there with a camera in hand. One day in London, and I feel as if I could fling my “WHY” around me on a big stick. It’s going to surround, influence and improve everything I do. My goals, my business and my photographic approach will be less about what other people are doing, and more about being true to myself.

One of the most unexpected ideas I brought away from Welcome Home; listening to Emma’s experiences, surrounded by the loveliest bunch of fellow photographers (homies!) is the realisation that you actually, can have it all.

For some reason I always thought the only way to be successful, was at the expense of having a fun or a life. Emma & Pete’s story so far is proof that you can have a life, love & fun, but work hard, be successful and have fun doing it.

Welcome Home has made realise I’ve been probably working really hard on all the wrong things, and I’ve nearly missed a lot of the important, amazing, beautiful stuff. I now know exactly what I have todo to be the person and photographer I should be. To find my home.

I am so ready. Let’s go do this.

First Week With The iPhone 5S

When the iPhone 5S was first announced, I like most people, wasn’t particularly impressed. I’m a huge fan of Apple and their products, but unless they are announcing something revolutionary, their minor product updates are pretty pedestrian. Better camera and a finger print sensor. Both nice, but certainly not essential.

However, my iPhone 4, the one I queued up for on launch day way back in June 2010, was on it’s last legs. The latest update to iOS 7 worked, but only just. You could tell the 3 year old phone was struggling to cope with all these new fancy features. There were so many features that didn’t work on the iPhone 4, and newer apps just ran so slowly on it. In particular, recording video with Instagram, and exporting images from VSCO Cam both caused a crash, every single time.

Considering how much I rely upon my phone for taking photos, dealing with client emails, reading ebooks and managing my social media, I figured it was about time a treated myself and upgraded to new phone. (In case your wondering, I didn’t take out a money grabbing, stuck for 2 years, ripoff mobile contract)

So, from a photographers perspective how am I finding the iPhone 5S? It’s fast. Really, really fast. Fast to start up the camera, fast to take images, editing apps whiz through previews and exporting, and sharing via instagram & facebook etc is quick as lighting and hasn’t crashed once. Compared to my iPhone 4, I can now shoot, edit and share in a fraction of the time it used to take. This has had a really positive impact on the amount of photographs I’m taking and sharing.

Sure, they are only mundane day-to-day snapshots, but the iPhone 5S feels to me like a properly capable camera, not just a smartphone. It’s effortless. It makes me want to use it, and use it a lot. Other features that newer iPhones have had for ages, like panorama and image stabilisation are good to finally have access to. Plus the bigger screen and battery life are big bonuses for me. My poor old little iPhone 4 barely lasted 8 hours on a charge, without taking a single photo.

As for image quality, its probably not amazing compared to current smartphones or a certainly any kind of DSLR, but for me, it is innumerably times better than my old iPhone 4. These images are actually half decent, sharp clear and a great starting point for processing through some of my favourite editing apps. The iPhone 5S can also shoot up-to 10 frames a second, silently which is pretty incredible for a phone. I’ve only briefly played around with the new “true tone flash” and slow mo video, but I’m sure those are gimmicks I will forget about soon enough.

For me the biggest benefit of the iPhone 5s is the speed and responsiveness, together with pretty decent image quality. It makes you feel like you can actually shoot a decent picture is most situations. It doesn’t feel like there are limitations to what it can do. Most of all, its quick, convenient to use and always with me. Which more than I can say for other cameras I own…

Here are some snapshots from my first week with the iPhone 5S, all shot and edited on the device. Follow me on Instagram to see more.
